Rodney Crowell is so attached to his homeland (he was born in Houston in 1950) that he named his 2019 album “Texas” after it.
Surrounded by top-level guests (from Lee Ann Womack, Ringo Starr, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Steve Earle to Billy F Gibbons), Crowell provides an excellent example of how to create an album made (often) of flowing country music and (at times, as in the case of the tracks “56 Fury” and “You're Only Happy When You're Miserable”) a thick air of rock.
