Before listening to “El Dorado”, we highly recommend you file away The Marcus King Band's last three records, ignore their impetuosity, forget their southern rock-filled sound.
“El Dorado” gives us a Marcus King committed (with the help of the meticulous work of talented producer Dan Auerbach) to showcasing his voice in the fields of soul and rhythm & blues music.
The result is captivating: twelve tracks (recorded at Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, Auerbach’s private studios) in which King’s (albeit praiseworthy) electric guitar playing takes a back seat to the artist’s vocal performance.
El Dorado (released in January 2020 and recorded by King with contributions from excellent musicians “recommended” by Auerbach) could potentially disappoint fans of the scorching guitar work delivered by Marcus King on “Soul Insight” (2014), “Marcus King Band” (2016) and “Carolina Confessions” (2018), but is capable of fully satisfying the appetites of admirers of intriguing soul and R&B executed with undeniable class and enthralling passion.
